Headshot Session Prep Guide
A few simple tips to help you look and feel your best on camera!
What to Wear
Keep it simple and classic. Solid colors typically photograph best—neutrals, jewel tones, or soft pastels work well. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or anything too trendy that may date your photo.
Layers work great. A blazer, cardigan, or structured jacket can add a professional touch and give you options during the session.
Necklines matter. Choose a neckline you feel confident in. Collared shirts, blouses, and simple tops often look great on camera.
Avoid bright white or neon. These can reflect light in unflattering ways. If you love a white shirt, try layering it under a darker jacket.
Wrinkle check. Make sure clothing is freshly steamed or pressed—wrinkles really show up in photos.
Hair + Makeup
Keep it natural and polished. Aim for a clean, everyday version of your usual look. You want to feel like you.
Avoid overly shiny or heavy makeup. Matte finishes work best, as shimmer or high-gloss products can catch light and appear oily on camera.
Men: A fresh shave or beard trim is recommended the day of your session.
Haircuts: If you’re due for a trim, try to schedule it at least a few days in advance to let it settle in naturally.
Before Your Session
Stay hydrated and get a good night’s sleep beforehand, it makes a noticeable difference in your skin and eyes.
Avoid trying anything new (skincare, hair products, makeup) right before the shoot, just in case it doesn’t agree with you.
Bring options! Feel free to bring an extra top or jacket if you’re unsure. I’m happy to help you decide on the best look for your photos.
